DESCRIPTION OF CONTEXT:  Investigating ways of transferring energy to cause movement in vehicles
BRIEF:
Mangonel
To build a device to shoot a table­ tennis ball over a barrier, the height being increased after each round. You are only allowed to hold the ball before ‘firing’, you must not hold the frame of the device and neither may it be taped to the floor. Only one person from a team is permitted to hold and fire the mangonel. You will be allowed one attempt at each barrier height, so your device must be reliable and also sufficiently robust to last several rounds.

Prior Knowledge needed:
How are forces used in the real world to create this type of movement? (provide examples and/or drawings from what you already know)
  • Gravity eg. When the table tennis ball is thrown up in the air, gravity will bring the tennis ball back down
  • Momentum eg. When launching the ball, it needs enough momentum to fly past the barrier
  • Air resistance eg. If it’s Head wind the air might push the table tennis ball back
  • Thrust eg. When launching the table tennis ball, it needs to be thrusted hard enough to go past the barrier

                   How jet engines work
Jet engines belong on planes and it would be dangerous putting them on other things as they are so powerful that you would hurt yourself  now lets learn how they work.


                                                                                                                                                                      Jet engines use more fuel than a propeller power engine.
the air is compressed and sprayed with fuel  and then lit with an electric spark.
The gasses (the compressed and fuel)expand and blast out of nozzle at the back of the engine blasting it forward That creates thrust.


Jet engines have developed over time and are used in travelling planes and the jet engines is faster then a propeller power plane

Jet engines are like gas turbines.                                                                                                         Like piston engines their power comes from burning fuel.                                                                     The difference is that they burn fuel continuously to spin the blades.

Jets are probably the best engine for a plane because small,fast and quiet
